Frequently Asked Questions

What types of medical interpreting services are there?
A medical interpreter can provide language support for you in several different ways:

  1. In-person interpretation – your linguist will be present in the room with you. This has many advantages. Not least, that they can be involved in the conversation. They can see non-verbal cues. And be a real asset for all parties concerned.
  2. Over-the-Phone Interpreting (OPI) – slightly more limited than having your linguist present in person, OPI is still a very convenient alternative. Your language specialist will have to listen carefully for verbal cues though. This is to make up for the fact that they can’t see any body language.
  3. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) – VRI is, in a sense, the best of both worlds. While still not as good as having your language specialist in the room, they can at least see non-verbal cues. All you need to do is ensure you have the right equipment and software to set this up.

The more your linguist becomes familiar with you, the more they will adjust to your mannerisms and preferences. The reverse is true too. Many of our clients tell us the value they place on having the same medical interpreter to see them through a series of doctor’s appointments, for example.

This remains the same no matter how you choose to have your language support delivered.

When would I need medical interpreters?

There is a broad range of situations where this type of language service is useful. This could include any of the following cases:

  • To make communication between patients and clinicians clear in all areas – from GPs and family doctors to critical care
  • Creating instructional packages for medical equipment
  • Marketing and advertising campaigns
  • Medical conferences and seminars
